Baking Soda, The All Purpose

Baking soda: The all purpose cleaner, deodorizer and beauty product? If you have ever seen a large box of baking soda which you would find in the laundry isle you may have noticed a list of non kitchen uses on the back. Baking soda is not only a refrigerator deodorizer but people also use it to clean surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen, cook, wash clothes, make erupting volcanoes, soften water and wash their hair and body. It truly is a cheap, safe and easy way to tackle many household chores. Here are some idea and uses and formulas.
Homemade Laundry Detergent.
Trying to save a buck? Try saving a lot of bucks with this cheap and super economical laundry detergent. I have been using this for about 7 months and I promise it WORKS!
- 1 (5 oz.) bar pure-castille soap- 1/2 Cup 20 Mule Team Borax (naturally occurring mineral, whitens, deodorizes)- 1/2 Cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda. (sodium carbonate/soda ash, removes: oil, dirt, odors and grease)-1/2 Cup baking soda. ( sodium bicarbonate, naturally occurring mineral, raises pH, water softener, neutralizer for smells and stains)- Be Young Essential Oils: 5 drops peppermint, 7 drops lavender, 10 drops rosemary (anti-viral, anti-bacterial)- Container large enough to hold 2 1/2 cups of laundry detergent.
Directions:1. Place baking soda and oils in a container and shake to mix together.2. Grate the bar of soap with a grater. You can unwrap the soap and air for a few days for a finer grated soap. Add.3. Add the 1/2 cup of Borax and 1/2 cup of washing soda. Shake and/or mix well.
Use: One tablespoon of detergent is sufficient per load of wash. If you have a high-efficiency machine, you might want to experiment with using a little less detergent for normal loads. If your clothes come out feeling stiff, lower the amount of detergent. For clothes that are heavily soiled, add a teaspoon more of the detergent.
Yield: The recipe yields 2 1/2 cups of laundry detergent. If you use 1 tablespoon per load, you will be able to wash 40 loads of clothes.
No Shampoo Hair Wash
Mix 1 part Soda with 3 parts water. Massage into scalp. Rinse throughly and follow with 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in one cup water. Rinse the ends and length of the hair keeping it away from scalp to prevent oiliness. You can do this once in a while to do a deep cleanse for your hair or you can do it on a permanent basis. You may go through a transition period if you choose to do it permanently. Just stick with it and you will have to wash your hair less often and it will eventually adjust. During the transition period you can expect oily or almost waxiness to your scalp and hair. But to save a ton of money and avoid the chemicals in shampoo it is worth it. If you hair is too greasy on the ends you need to decrease the vinegar in your solution. If it is too dry you can try adding more vinegar or some jojoba oil to your rinse.

Hypotrichosis! Oh NO!

There is so much hype about that new medication to grow longer eyelashes called Latisse.  There is the commercial featuring Brooke Shields of course and then there are a bunch of bloggers online literally picking the add apart.  I am not one to recommend a prescription for anything especially for cosmetic reasons.  However, I happen to be related to an Optometrist and I picked his brain about the medication that he has been prescribing to his patients for glaucoma for 12 years.  My first major concern is that the commercial says that brown pigmentation has been reported.  I have blue eyes and have no intention of EVER having brown eyes.  He said he has never seen anyone's eyes change color. The patients with glaucoma medication put it directly in their eyes not just on the eye lid.  I would imagine not putting it in the eye would decrease this risk even more.  In one bloggers rant they mentioned that if you got it anywhere but your eyelids you would grow hair there... really?  I think if one drop of it, one time could cause you to grow any hair that it would be marketed for balding men.  Not to mention there would be a bunch of old people walking around with super hairy faces.  So, I don't know, maybe those bloggers get some promotions from mascara companies to bash Latisse.  I don't see any reason not to use it if you want to unless it bothers your skin.  Now, about the cost... My optometrist said that the glaucoma medication CAN be used the same way.  Just apply it with a make up brush.  It is much cheaper.  You just have to get an optometrist to give you a prescription for it.  Your insurance company probably wont pay for it though.  Obviously.  I personally am going to get it from an online pharmacy for $30, instead of the $70+.

UPDATE: I just found this website where you can get the generic for $12 (shipping is $20 to my location but even so, it's still cheaper)!  Also here is a website with extensive questions and answers about Latisse.

10 Fruits and Vegetables a Day! YOU ARE CRAZY!

I know I've mentioned before that we should be eating more like 5 servings of fruits and 5 servings of vegetables a day.  And I know when I said this that a majority of you went, HECK NO CRAZY LADY!  You were thinking about the diarrhea you would have from all of that fruit and the gas from all of the vegetables.  Well, just calm down a second. It's not as much as you think it is.  Check this out!

5 servings of fruit is:
one medium banana, one large apple, and hand full of grapes.

Uh, wait Val, you said 5, don't you know math crazy lady?!

Okay, first of all, stop calling me crazy.  Here is how it is broken down.  Half a medium banana is one serving.  A nice big sized apple is 2!  See! It's not going to be as hard as you thought.

Now for vegetables.

2 cup of  fresh spinach,  1/2 cup of broccoli,  1/2 cup of peas, 5-7 asparagus shoots.
See?  So easy.  You could eat all of that in a nice big salad!

Building a Strong Foundation for a Healthy Life.

Now, this pyramid (thanks HSPH) Is unlike any we have previously seen before.  Now the first problem with the original food pyramid is that it's well, wrong and incomplete information.  The next thing is that it's done by the government.  Now, what does the government know about our health.  NOTHING.  Even if the government hires the best nutritional experts in the world it will still do what is in it's best interest and that is not what is alway in your best interest.  For example, the government subsidizes the dairy and grain industry in the states.  So, naturally they are going to want you to eat a lot of dairy and grains.

A problem with general health in this country is that we also have this crazed media that has to sensationalize everything.  Everyweek there is some new wonder food that will make you live longer and be skinnier and then the next month it will give you cancer!  Well enough already, I say enough!

Let's look at food logically.  Got to eat to live, we are made up of the stuff we eat and if we eat a large variety of healthy, natural foods we will be getting a lot of benefits instead of eating a lot of one thing and getting only one benefit.

This food pyramid shows more than just food, it also shows a lifestyle.  On the bottom, the foundation, it shows exercising, keeping a healthy weight (anything under overweight) and a balanced diet.  The next level puts vegetables and healthy fats (unsaturated) on the same level as grains.  Yes, we should be eating tons of fruits and vegetables.  No more 5 a day.  How about 5 vegetables and 5 fruits a day or more!  Then we have proteins and legumes, then a little dairy and an even smaller amount of white breads, sugars and saturated fats.  Also on the side are some red wine and vitamins.

This is a great way to build your Healthy Life Pyramid.  Build your foundation with the sound principles of balance and nutrition.

If you get confused with all the hubbub out there about this diet and that, you can always come back to us here at Healthy Life Crusaders and we'll take you back to the basics, and help you rebuild your foundation!

Beat the constant cravings!

I, like many others crave sugar and junk food frequently and some days constantly.  How can we beat these cravings into the ground like a mouse that has crawled up our leg?  What?  You don't like my metaphor?  Enough humor, this is serious.  I have a tried and true method for reducing cravings.  Adopt these few simple changes and you too can beat the cravings.

1.  Exercise.  Especially cardio.  It levels out your blood sugar which is one of the reasons you crave sweets and carbohydrates.  You don't have to be a runner or anything, just get a lot of walking or aerobics in. Anything that gets your heart rate up.

2.  Eat more fruits and vegetables.  They will not only fill you up but give your body what it is looking for when it gives you a craving.

3. Don't eat junk food anymore!  The more you eat it, the more you want it!  Just about anything pre-packaged and boxed is bad for you, so stick with whole meals, from fresh ingredients when ever possible.

4.  Drink more clean, filtered water.  Sometimes, when you think you are hungry or want sweets, it's really liquid you need.  If you drink a lot of soda or juice your body will crave it when it is thirsty.

5.  Eat more protein.  No, hamburgers do not count!  Eat lean meats, like poultry and fish and vegetable or grain sources of protein.

So, there you have it.  5 easy changes you can make in your life to stop the horrible craver monster.  Kill, the cravings, BEAT THEM DEAD!

Anti-Bacterial Body Wash

This is an all natural "body wash" that is healthy and really works to kill bacteria and exfoliate. I like it best for use on your face AND this is really, REALLY good for your armpits...a place that often gets over looked when it comes to exfoliating. You can use this on your whole body if you like but I tend to use it on my face and pits. This is something I would recommend to do three days a week. This "recipe" really helps to brighten your face and remove dead skin cells and kill bacteria. It is great for your pits because your arm pits hold odors. This is due to dead skin and the bacteria that dwell there and EAT the dead skin and cells. This formula will exfoliate the dead skin AND kill the bacteria. I guarantee if you do this at least three times a week you will notice your pits are fresher, smell less and will develop ingrown hairs less often due to shaving. Try to do this on a day you do NOT shave as it will sting if you do.

You will need:

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) that is RAW. I recommend a brand on another article so do a search and read about it, it is great stuff! (brightens skin, kills bacteria and fungus)

Lemon Juice Concentrate (shrinks pores, softens skin, fights odors)

Mineral Salt (kills bacteria)

Table Sugar (exfoliates skin)

Mix 1/4 cup ACV with 1/8 cup lemon concentrate. Add 1 tablespoon table sugar and 2 teaspoons mineral salt. Mix all four ingredients well and ad 2 tablespoons water. This should be enough for your face and pits. Do this in the shower! Just rub WELL on pits and face away from the flowing shower (keep your eyes AND mouth closed). Rinse away when done with water. Give it a try!

You mean I can eat FAT?!

Yes you can!!!  Now, hold your applause.  Not all fats are created equally.  That's right, there are good fats, bad fats and evil fats.  Bad fats not only make you fat, but they aggravate your cells causing inflammation and they raise your bad cholesterol.

Saturated fats are the bad fats. They are solid at room temperature.  They are not "evil" because you can eat them in moderation.  Your body does produce cholesterol from saturated fats but we all need some cholesterol.  Not all cholesterol is created equally either.  There is bad and good cholesterol.
You will find saturated fats (named so because the molecules are "saturated" in hydrogen) in animal products such as whole milk, butter, cream, red meat, eggs, coconut, coconut oil, peanuts and avocados.

Unsaturated fats are the best fats for you.  They are liquid at room temperature.  Unsaturated fats will raise your good cholesterol, make you feel fuller, decrease your chance for heart disease and much more.
You will find unsaturated fats in cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, grains, almonds, canola oil and peanuts.

You may have noticed that peanuts are under both lists.  Peanuts do have both fats and are still healthy for you! Should you go eat a truck load of peanuts??? No!  But you should eat a few handfuls a week.  Avocado's are high is saturated fat for a fruit, however they are still much lower than animal products and I would still recommend you eat them weekly.  Not six a day.  It's all about moderation with fats and eating a lot more of the good fats.

Trans fats, the evil fat.  Trans fats are processed fats.  That means they were made in a beaker in a lab (they can also occur when you burn your oil).  Never, ever eat trans fats.  They are so evil in fact, that they raise your bad cholesterol and lower your good cholesterol.  They wreak havoc on your cells and create inflammation.  Inflamed cells are sad cells that cause you pain and suffering.  Trans fats also make you fat!  So please, for the love of Pete, do not eat them. You can find trans fats in anything with hydrogenated oils.  Even if the packaging says that it has "0 trans fats" it may have .99 of a gram of it and they are still allowed to say it has "0 grams". It is best to read the labels and stay away from anything with hydrogenated anything in it.

There are 2 kinds of cholesterol.
Bad cholesterol: LDL  Limit Saturated fats and banish trans fats.
Good cholesterol: HDL Eat more mono-unsaturated fats to raise your good cholesterol.

Here is your grocery store and dieting cheat sheet to fats:

Unsaturated fats, (Mono and Poly Unsaturated.) Vegetation sources of fats. Raises good cholesterol, prevents heart disease. Decreases cell inflammation.

Saturated fats, animal and dairy sources.  Raises bad cholesterol, contributes to heart disease.

Trans fats, anything with hydrogenated oils.  Lowers good cholesterol and raises bad cholesterol.  Aggravates cell inflammation.

Walking has so many health benefits.  It can help you loose weight, ease depression, curb your appetite and get you places!  The left hand, right foot, right hand, left foot action stimulates both sides of the brain.  Walking also releases endorphins for a great mood pick-me-up.  If you walk for 30 minutes or more a day, it can definitely help you loose weight. Especially if you walk briskly and up and down inclines.  Running can be really hard on your joints and can cause you to release adrenaline.  Adrenaline can cause hardening of arteries overtime.  Walking does the opposite, it calms, relaxes, releases happy hormones and keeps you fit.  Here are some articles on the benefits of walking.

Happy walking!

Easy Oatmeal Muffins HEALTHY!

I LOVE this recipe. It is easy, super healthy and YUMMY!

1 cup quick cooking oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

1 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup oil

**I also like to ad 1/4 cup wheat BRAN and 1/2 cup pecans but this is completely optional**

Yes, you can use white flour but they will not be as healthy.

Mix it all well now and scoop into a muffin pan. Spray it with non-stick spray OR use muffin wrappers. I prefer to spray. Will make about 12 REGULAR sized muffins.

Cook at 375 for about 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them. ENJOY!

When I was about 24 I developed a severe case of vertigo and let me tell you, it was awful. One of the worst things I have ever dealt with. If you have ever suffered with a severe or mild case, you know what I am talking about. I was dizzy all the time, REAL dizziness and it was worse when I would lie down, so that didn't help. My ears rang constantly and felt more plugged than I have ever experienced. I walked leaning sideways...usually to the left which caused me to run into walls and doors frequently. I couldn't drive, I couldn't even stand to be in a moving car. It went on for weeks and weeks. I saw a doctor about it but he didn't think I had vertigo because I told him I was having a hard time grasping pencils and doorknobs. I knew he was wrong...go spin around and around then try to use your motor skills and tell me it isn't a little more than difficult...PLUS I had EVERY vertigo symptom in the book. Since then I have mild spouts of vertigo every now and then. Here is an exercise I do that really helps. It also helped to finally break up the vertigo I was having then too. I would suggest you try it even if you are unsure if you are having vertigo or dizziness from something else, like an inner ear infection etc. You will want somebody to help you that can watch a clock for you and tell you when it is time to "roll". Lie on your back, flat on the floor with your face pointing up towards the ceiling. Have your helper time you in this position for one FULL minute. When the minute is up, have your helper let you know by saying something like, "roll" "ok" "over" or whatever you choose. Now, turn your HEAD ONLY to the right but keep your body laying flat on its back. Hold your head in this position for one FULL minute again. When your helper says "ok" roll your face flat onto the floor and your body onto its belly. If you do not like your face in your floor, use a blanket. Again, hold here for one minute. When this minute is done, turn your HEAD ONLY to the RIGHT again, but leave your body on its belly. When this minute is through, roll your body back onto its back with your face facing upwards once again. Repeat this WHOLE pattern for THREE full body rolls. Holding a minute each. Each body roll will amount to 4 minutes, so 12 minutes total. Once you have completed this, do the EXACT same thing again but this time you will roll your head and your body to the LEFT. The entire exercise takes over 20 minutes. This will help the little inner ear bones to align better helping to or completely relieve the dizziness. It helps me every time. Good luck!

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV

LOVE THE STUFF! It is an amazing, natural product that fulfills a lot of needs. First of all, I am not talking about the cheap stuff you buy at any store. I am talking about the raw, unfiltered type that still maintains the "mother" of the vinegar, all the good old natural parts that have not been filtered out through processing or heating. My favorite brand is called Bragg. You can find it in many health food stores and even some typical grocery type stores carry it, you just have to look around. It is more pricey than some cheap brand but hey, you get what you pay for and it is like the difference between buying yourself a dollar store doll or a real name brand Barbie...I pick the Barbie LOL. So, what is it good for? I will share what I have used it for with great results...but there is also loads and loads of uses listed online you can look into as well.

First, a beauty tip using Bragg ACV. Now, this one is tough but the benefits are SO worth it. I started drinking 1 Tablespoon of Bragg ACV every morning. It has been a health product for many years for many reasons so I thought I would try it. Here is what I discovered after only 3 days on it. For myself personally, my skin was AMAZING and I mean it. No joke, it was SO clear and SO bright and just looked a lot younger. After some research I found it contains some anti-aging properties and boy does it! Next, I noticed I had NO MORE heartburn which is a constant problem for me. I took it every morning and NO heartburn throughout the day...at all. It is also supposed to be good for heartburn and boy was it truly! It is not the best tasting stuff and it really has a kick. I mixed it with a little apple juice every morning and just drank it down as fast as I could. It is what a really strong apple ale might taste like in my personal opinion and pretty nasty...but it was only two or three swallows worth and I found the benefits worth it. I also have found 1 tsp of honey mixed with 1 tsp of Bragg ACV warmed and swallowed is really quite a good cough suppressant.

The next thing I like using the ACV for is cleaning. It works great as a cleaner on counters and floors and in your bathroom. Just use it straight, no diluting, in a spray bottle and let it evaporate back into the air after you are done cleaning with it.

Last but surely not least, I use it on my horses hooves. It is a great antifungal and kills the thrush in the hoof very well when an infection is present. With all of that said, I would recommend giving it a try! Read up on its uses and maybe you will find something it does for you that really works! I love the stuff and always have some on hand.

Healthy Sleep Habits

Sleep is important to being healthy. I don't think most people realize how important.  Lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain and hormonal problems, not to mention grouchiness.  The same is true for our little ones.  (Men, Don't stop reading just because you don't think the child rearing isn't up to you...  If you want a happy, healthy wife and mother of your children you will want to share this with her.)  I once lived next to this strange couple who would put their baby to bed at around 6:00PM.  They swore that they just put him in his bed and he would go to sleep by himself and sleep all night... Same for naps.  They would just put him in his crib and leave the room.  No crying, no rocking, just a happily obliging baby would lie down and sleep.  I asked them how this was possible. I had no kids of my own at the time but knew this wasn't normal.  They said they read and followed a book called Healthy Sleep Habits: Happy Child. (by Marc Weissbluth) I never wrote down the name of the book, I just remembered it years later when I was pregnant with my first.  I read it while I was pregnant and thought the ideas were sound.  You can't really do anything about a baby's sleep habits the first 3 months of life.  But around 3-4 months you can start implementing the directions in the book and 2 out of 2 times it has worked for me!  My 4 month old baby goes to sleep all by himself at nap time and bed time.  He sleeps a 7 hour stretch at night and then another 4 hour stretch in the morning plus 3, 1-2 hour naps during the day.  My oldest did the same.  Guess what!  They sleep longer and longer until they are about 2 years old.  This is why I have time to sit down and write coherent blog posts.  LOL.  You can literally buy this book online for $1 plus S+H.  So, what do you have to lose but some quality time with your baby, listening to them scream and cry when you both should be sleeping?!

Got Breast Milk???

I hope we are all aware of the benefits of nursing. Breast milk is one of the healthiest, natural foods there are. It helps your baby grow properly, helps their bowls function properly and prepares their stomachs for solids. I would suggest if at all possible, you nurse your babies! It is also the most amazing bond you will every discover between you and your infant. HOWEVER, breast milk is also good for other things too! Now before you make a sour face and scream out at your monitor, "GROSS!"...remember it is natural and normal. Only the American society has made such a big deal about something so natural and amazing being disgusting. I am not going to recommend a homemade ice cream recipe that replaces cows milk with your own or your cousins who happens to be nursing twins...so take a deep breath and have an open mind. Breast milk for all mammals is amazingly healthy. It is full of antibodies and other components that make it ideal for new and growing babies. Antibodies are amazing! They keep your baby from getting sicknesses that you yourself are already immune to to some degree among other beneficial properties. It also helps babies of all mammalian types to learn to digest solid foods, helping prepare the stomach for new foods. Formula babies tend to have more colic and food allergies for this reason. Now, here is where my tips come in. Maybe I am weird but I just thought of these things while I was nursing my first baby. I decided what the heck, I will try it and to my amazement I saw incredible results. First, one time when my little guy had super bad diaper rash, the kind that is very inflamed and even has little bloody spots...I decided to put some breast milk onto the diaper rash to see what would happen. Now, I don't need to go into detail on how I got the milk on the bum...I think if you nurse, have nursed or will nurse you can figure this part out...LOL. I let it dry a little then wrapped his bum back up in his diaper. To my surprise and amazement, when I went to change him next the rash was 90% GONE and I kid you not. And it was a bad rash, as I said he was even having blood spots and open sores and nothing I was doing was working. I was shocked but at the same time not so surprised that something so healthy and full of antibodies would be such a soothing and healing substance. I did this the rest of the time I nursed and it worked everytime. I think my sister may have tried it as well with great results but I don't remember. Now the second thing I learned...sort of came to my mind after I realized how well it worked on the diaper rash...was to apply it to bug bites and guess what, same results. I am quite sensetive to bug bites and have more than normal reactions and I found applying breast milk to them made the swelling and itching subside and almost immediately too. So anyhow, if you are into natural cures and approaches and have the resources (aka nursing LOL) you may find that this works for you and your baby.

CHEAP Beauty Tip! Shrinking Pores!

How many of you ladies (or gentlemen) out there have noticed over time that your pores just aren't as tight as they use to be when you were say like, 15? Even 20? Especially around your nose, ON your nose and around your chin area? There are some products on the market that are meant to shrink your pores. I have seen cleansers, masks and foundations who advertise just that. I honestly haven't tried any of them because this tip works for me, and it works well. Again you will say, that can't work it is too simple but it does! Of course everything will work differently from person to person, but I generally believe this will work for most people, if not everyone to some degree. More or less depending on who you are. BUT, it is cheap and easy AND ALL NATURAL (which was the point of the sugar face wash as well). All you need is a cotton ball, a small bowl or container and lemon juice. That's all! Pure lemon juice. It can be the kind that comes in a large bottle or in the small lemon shaped squeeze bottle. The only stipulation is it needs to be COLD so keep it in your fridge. This really does work, I have been doing it for a long time. Here is what you need to do. Apply it to your face AFTER your shower or face washing and BEFORE you apply your moisturizer and makeup. It does tickle and sting a little but it really works. So, just soak a cotton ball in lemon juice (COLD LEMON JUICE, AS COLD AS YOU CAN GET IT WITHOUT IT BEING FROZEN) and liberally apply it to your WHOLE face and neck, especially anywhere you feel you have large pores. For me it is my nose, around my nose and under my lower lip. Let it dry. It actually will soften your skin quite a bit too. Sometimes enough I don't even need to use a moisturizer. If you do use a moisturizer, wait until it is completely dry (doesn't take long) and add a very light layer so you don't suffocate your skin. Then do your makeup routine the same as you always would. Good luck and give it a try! I have always had very good luck with this. It makes my pores shrink up and my makeup look much smoother and clean on my face. It will NOT bleach out your face or clear your freckles or anything like that. It is perfectly safe to use unless you are allergic to lemons! :)
